Thousands of people across Latvia took part in the national ''talka'' or clean up over the weekend, collecting litter, cutting back overgrown undergrowth, planting trees and generally improving the environment to get Latvia in good shape during its centenary year, reports.

President Raimonds Vējonis was among the crowds with gloves and bin bag at the ready April 28, joining members of Latvia's cadet training force to restore a walkway over the River Koja near an historic battlefield at Skrunda.
